TGC - A History of Eastern Europe

Duration: 12h 6m | Video: .MP4 1280x720, 30 fps(r) | Audio: AAC, 44100Hz, 2ch | Size: 10.1 GB
Genre: eLearning | Language: English

Eastern Europe has long been thought of as the "Other Europe," a marginalized region rife with political upheaval, shifting national borders, an astonishing variety of ethnic diversity, and relative isolation from the centers of power in the West. Yet in recent years, Eastern European nations have begun integrating with Western Europe-joining NATO and the European Union-as the region has gained a new measure of self-determination in the wake of communist collapse.

Nonetheless, Eastern Europe still maintains an aura of "otherness" and mystery, due to its relatively tumultuous timeline and complex cultural tapestry. Indeed, history haunts this region, so to truly understand Eastern Europe today, it is necessary to examine its past in the broader context of world history, asking such questions as:

Who are the diverse ethnic groups that make up the region, and how have they cooperated and clashed?
How and why have national borders shifted so frequently?
What is the region's relationship to Western Europe?
How has the region been isolated from-and connected with-the West?
You'll find the answers to these questions and more in A History of Eastern Europe. Taught by Professor Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius, an award-winning professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, these 24 insightful lectures offer a sweeping 1,000-year history of Eastern Europe with a particular focus on the region's modern history. You'll observe waves of migration and invasion, watch empires rise and fall, witness wars and their deadly consequences-and come away with a comprehensive knowledge of one of the world's most fascinating places.

This course goes far beyond issues of military and political history. Professor Liulevicius delves deeply into the cultures of this region-the 20 nations that stretch from the Baltic to the Black Seas. You'll meet the everyday citizens-including artists and writers-who shaped the politics of Eastern Europe, from poets-turned-politicians to proletarian workers who led dissident uprisings. Breathtaking in scope and crucially relevant to today's world, A History of Eastern Europe is a powerful survey of a diverse region and its people.

Discover the Historical Context for Today's Eastern Europe

The story of Eastern Europe is very much in flux today. In 2014, Russia invaded Crimea during a time of chaotic unrest in the Ukraine. Slide back to the 1990s, and the Balkan states erupted into a brutal civil war that rewrote the national boundaries of Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, and others. Slide back another few years, and you witness the 70-year-old USSR disintegrate, leaving in its wake a hodgepodge of nations with crumbled economies and uncertain national identities.

These events are products of more than recent history-or even modern history. To truly understand the ongoing news in Eastern Europe, it's necessary to step back a thousand years to find the foundations of today's world.

See how the waves of invasions by Mongols, the Ottoman Turks, and others left their mark on Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages.
Trace the origins of the Slavic peoples, the Magyars, Germanic tribes, the Roma, and other ethnicities who make up the region.
Discover how events such as the Crusades and the Black Death led to a large influx of Jews to modern-day Poland.
Witness the battles, political strife, and nationalism that gave rise to nations such as Poland-Lithuania and empires in Russia, Prussia, and Germany.
Studying this history helps explain Eastern Europe's wide mix of languages, religions, and cultures. In this course, you will see how these cultures clashed internally-and how a vast array of external enemies and empires have tried repeatedly to carve out territories or spheres of influence within the region. Professor Liulevicius brings to life the local people's struggles-through cooperation among coalitions as well as through armed conflicts-for survival and self-rule.

Gain a New Perspective on Europe's East vs. West Divide

Eastern Europe has long been a marginalized region-considered the home of "barbarians" by the Greeks, far-flung backwater provinces to the Romans, fair prey for the Mongols-a vast land for civilized empires to "enlighten." But in the 20th and 21st centuries, the divide between East and West grew more pronounced as the world globalized and the United States and Soviet superpowers jockeyed for spheres of influence-epitomized by the imposition of the Iron Curtain across Europe and the rise of the Berlin Wall.

Professor Liulevicius offers you a different perspective on the last hundred years of history, beginning with the end of World War I. Whereas Western Europe viewed the Great War as a total catastrophe marked by years of stalemate and a shaky peace, Eastern Europeans viewed the war as a fiery baptism of national independence. Likewise, when the guns fell silent and stability returned to the West after World War II, a series of bloody conflicts continued in the East. And of course, the Iron Curtain that partitioned East and West for half a century has left deep marks on the Eastern Europe of today.

This course presents the grand sweep of all this history and clues you in on the context necessary to understand today's world. Professor Liulevicius also gives you specific, unique insights that are fascinating in their own right-and seldom mentioned in the history books. Among other historical details, you will:

Go inside the Jewish shtetls, most of which were destroyed during World War II.
Gain insight into the Nazi-Soviet Pact, including the motivating worldviews of Hitler and Stalin.
Learn about the waves of ethnic cleansing in Eastern Europe after World War II, and the resulting orphans known as "wolf children."
Study the little-known Baltic Forest War, which, incredibly, continued until the late 1970s.
Experience daily life behind the Iron Curtain, from mass surveillance and the police state to the broken economies and worker uprisings.
Meet leaders such as the Yugoslavian President Josip Tito, the Polish dissident worker Anna Walentynowicz, the Czech writer-turned-president Václav Havel, and many other people who shaped the course of history.
You'll also witness the stunning collapse of communism across Eastern Europe, sparked by mass protests and fueled by governmental ineptitude. The widespread chaos created great suffering, reshaping the region's economies, politics, ideologies, and geographical boundaries.

Study the Cultural History of the Region

George Orwell once said, "Every joke is a tiny revolution." Created and shared under circumstances of high pressure and risk, Eastern European jokes and satirical-or nationalistic-works of art are full of humorous and passionate expressions of resistance, defiance, despair, and the will to survive. Professor Liulevicius bridges the personal and the political in this course, analyzing the meaning and impact of widespread dark humor and introducing you to poets, writers, artists, and other cultural figures who all made an impact on Eastern European history. In fact, studying the history gives you a whole new context for understanding authors such as:

Franz Kafka
Czesław Miłosz
Milan Kundera
Václav Havel
Herta Müller
And many others
In addition, he introduces you to some authors who are relatively obscure in the West, such as Jaroslav HaÅ¡ek (author of The Good Soldier Åvejk, one of the funniest and most profound antiwar novels in existence), and Zlata Filipovic (a 12-year-old whose diary from the Bosnian War has been compared to the Diary of Anne Frank).

Professor Liulevicius is an ideal guide for this course, having focused on Germany and Eastern Europe during his entire academic career. From a period of study in Moscow and Leningrad in 1989, to dissertation research in Freiburg, Germany, and Vilnius, Lithuania, in the early 1990s, to his term as president of the international Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies (A.A.B.S.) for 2010-12, he has spent decades pursuing and disseminating knowledge of this fascinating region. His insights into the clashes and unexpected alliances of empires, peoples, and philosophies will clarify the complex twists and turns of the narrative of Eastern European history.

In Eastern Europe, culture and politics are inextricably linked with centuries of tumultuous change, and this in-depth course will explore the intersection of these factors to give you a comprehensive understanding of the region and its status in the world today. A History of Eastern Europe is a marvelous overview of the story of an essential and often overlooked area of the globe, and will fill in many critical gaps in the social and political history of the world.

The Palace and Gardens of Versailles-Among Europe's most spectacular royal residences, and the majestic seat of Louis XIV, the "Sun King";

France has often been a major player in some of the most impactful events of European history, making it an infinitely rewarding place to visit for history buffs and for travelers looking for a rich, cultural experience. In the course of this wide-ranging travelogue, you will truly experience France through the ages. As you journey through France's regions and subregions, you'll encounter landmarks of French heritage, such as:

The 35,000-year-old cave paintings of Lascaux and Chauvet, among the world's most stunning prehistoric artworks;
The imposing medieval castles of the Cathars-a storied religious sect-and their dramatic history;
Outsized historical figures such as Eleanor of Aquitaine, Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc), and Charles de Gaulle, and the sites associated with their lives;
The historic locations where the world-changing French Revolution unfolded; and
The enthralling worlds of George Sand, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and the swirl of art and artists in 19th-century bohemian Paris.
Along with a thorough look at the past, you will also get to see the cultural landscape of contemporary France, as captured in the French passion for art, cinema, soccer, fine food, and daring modernist building projects across the country, such as the Viaduc de Millau, a wonder of 21st-century engineering.

Travel to the Heart of French Culture

Throughout the tour, Professor Greene delights in probing the question of what makes France such a magnet for visitors from all over the world. Central to this matter is the art de vivre, a sensibility that permeates nearly every aspect of French life, expressing the French people's desire to live well and to seek out the best life has to offer, in terms of food, art and culture, décor, fashion, nature, and more.

As just one instance of the art de vivre in action, you'll study the concept of "terroir" in French winemaking-the combined factors of the grape, soil, growth environment, weather patterns, and how the land is worked, all of which define the identity and value of a fine wine.

Across the 24 segments of the tour, you'll experience this hallmark of French culture in examples such as:

The Multiple Wonders of Paris-Within six full segments on Paris, dig deeply into the French capital-arguably the world's most aesthetically beautiful major city. Stroll the Grands Boulevards and the enchanting squares, a masterstroke of 19th-century urban planning. TTC - King Arthur: History and Legend

Duration: 12h 5m | Video: .MP4 1280x720, 30 fps(r) | Audio: AAC, 44100Hz, 2ch | Size: 10.1 GB
Genre: eLearning | Language: English

The saga of King Arthur and his knights and ladies is perhaps the most enduringly popular mythic tradition of Western civilization. For over 1500 years, the Arthurian narrative has enthralled writers, artists, and a limitless audience in countries spanning the Western world and beyond-and its appeal continues unabated in our own times.

With origins in the exploits of a 5th-century Celtic warrior, the legend of a noble king and his knightly cohort caught fire across Europe, spawning a vast literary tradition that reached its height in the Middle Ages, with major contributions from writers both in Britain and throughout the Continent.

But the appeal of the saga far outlived the medieval era. It remained dynamically alive in folk culture and theater through the Renaissance, only to see an epic literary and artistic resurgence in the 19th century, which continues to the present day in multiple forms-from fiction writing and visual arts to film and popular culture. No other heroic figure in literature compares with King Arthur in terms of global popularity and longevity; today, each year sees literally thousands of new versions of the story appear across diverse media.

What does this amazing phenomenon tell us about our culture, our civilization, and ourselves? What is it about this particular story that has so deeply gripped the human imagination for so many centuries, in so many places?

King Arthur: History and Legend speaks deeply to these key questions and many more, revealing the full and astonishing scope of the Arthurian tradition, from its beginnings in post-Roman Britain to its extraordinary trajectory across the centuries and its latest incarnations in our own times. Within 24 content-rich lectures, you'll encounter all of the most essential portrayals of the Arthurian saga in literature and art, encompassing:

the preeminent treatments of the legend in Latin, Welsh, and English texts, including milestone versions from Geoffrey of Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain to T.H. White's The Once and Future King;
seminal versions of the narrative and major thematic additions by writers in France, Germany, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, and other European countries, including monumental texts such as the Perlesvaus and the Prose Lancelot;
iconic representations of Arthurian themes in visual art, from medieval stonework and woodcarving to the flowering of the saga in 19th-century painting and decorative art; and
the remarkable transformations of the stories in 20th- and 21st-century literature, art, and film.
Your pathfinder in this world of mythic adventure and romance is Professor Dorsey Armstrong of Purdue University, an expert Arthurian scholar and current editor-in-chief of the academic journal Arthuriana, who brings rare insight and depth to this most unusual and compelling inquiry. Through her incisive commentary, you'll draw out the core archetypes and cultural values that drive the saga, exploring in depth its elemental themes of kingship, courage, virtue, loyalty, romantic love, and devotion to God.

You'll also trace how the myth developed across time, clarifying many misunderstood aspects of the narrative, such as the origins of the Round Table and the figure of Merlin, the illicit love between Lancelot and Guenevere, and the varied manifestations of the magical Holy Grail. You'll discover how the legend was appropriated and assimilated by differing cultures, and how each writer in the tradition reflected and commented, through the Arthurian narrative, on the concerns of their own time and place. The result is an illuminating look at one of the most engaging, entertaining, and impactful legendary traditions the world has ever known.

A Myth for the Ages

In the course's opening section, you'll delve into the historical mystery behind the figure of Arthur, finding that the real-life model for the legend bore little resemblance to the noble monarch so many of us imagine. Within the grand legacy of Arthurian literature, you'll study integral elements of the tradition such as:

The History of the Kings of Britain: Take the measure of Geoffrey of Monmouth's 12th-century blockbuster bestseller, perhaps the single most significant Arthurian text. Assess the acutely political nature of the work, and observe how Geoffrey established many core features of the legend as we've come to know it.
King Arthur and the French: Discover how French writers working between the 12th and 14th centuries expanded the Arthurian narrative in essential ways, fully developing the ethos of courtly love, contributing characters such as the heroic figure of Lancelot, and linking Arthur's knightly community with spiritual and religious endeavors.
The German Arthurian Tradition: Grasp the vital impact of German treatments of the saga. Note how German writers grappled with philosophical questions of the relation of worldly undertakings to devotion to God, and see how they developed important narrative strands such as the Tristan legend and the Grail quest.
Le Morte Darthur: Explore Sir Thomas Malory's definitive 15th-century account of the story, which essentially "set" the legend for all subsequent writers. Observe how Malory brought together the entire Arthurian narrative in a comprehensive retelling, and also introduced the Pentecostal Oath, a knightly code of honor and key thematic element.
Idylls of the King: Learn how Alfred, Lord Tennyson's great poetic cycle-some of the most beautiful, idealized writing in the tradition-almost singlehandedly triggered a huge resurgence in Arthurian expression in the 19th century and deeply influenced Victorian visual art.
The Mists of Avalon: Among noteworthy 20th-century treatments of the legend, contemplate Marion Zimmer Bradley's revolutionary feminist retelling of the saga, portraying Arthur's rise and fall through the perspectives of Arthur's half-sister Morgaine and the druidic faith of the Mother Goddess.
A Tradition of Astounding Richness and Diversity

In the course's final section, you'll travel into many additional areas of Arthurian expression. Within the realm of visual art, you'll trace the remarkable contributions of the artists of the 19th-century Pre-Raphaelite movement. Marvel at the Arthurian paintings of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones, Edmund Leighton, and others, as well as the decorative art in stained glass and tapestry of William Morris and his circle.

You'll take account of how Richard Wagner adapted and modified the legend in his two Arthurian operas, Tristan und Isolde and Parsifal, and how Mark Twain lampooned both British and American society in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Finally, you'll track the saga into our own times in examples ranging from Mary Stewart's remarkable Merlin trilogy to the ingenious comic book rendering of Camelot 3000 and noteworthy film treatments such as John Boorman's Excalibur and Antoine Fuqua's King Arthur.

Demonstrating both encyclopedic knowledge and an infectious passion for the subject, Professor Armstrong is the perfect guide in this epic quest. The lectures are enriched with striking visual images, including important manuscripts, photos of locations associated with the legend, and Arthurian-related art and architecture from around the world.

King Arthur: History and Legend offers you a comprehensive and detailed overview of the Arthurian phenomenon in all of its extraordinary diversity and enduring impact. These fascinating lectures speak to the essence of what is arguably the Western world's most beloved and deeply cherished myth.

TTC - The Great Tours: African Safari

Duration: 12h 21m | Video: .MP4 1280x720, 30 fps(r) | Audio: AAC, 44100Hz, 2ch | Size: 10.3 GB
Genre: eLearning | Language: English

Africa is a beautiful continent, home to some of the world's most extraordinary scenery and wildlife. Astonishing animals, untamed wilderness, diverse ecosystems: A safari into this great land is an unforgettable experience. From the savannahs of Kenya and Tanzania to the jungles of Uganda and Rwanda to the coasts of Madagascar, an African safari will truly ignite your sense of adventure.

Discover the safari adventure for yourself in The Great Tours: African Safari, an extraordinary course brought to you in partnership with National Geographic. Taught by the highly experienced safari guide James Currie, these 24 exciting lectures take you onto the plains and into the jungles of Africa. Captivating details and gorgeous imagery bring the safari experience to your living room.

The word "safari" may conjure up specific images: waking up at a rugged campsite at dawn to take a 4x4 truck into the African bush to witness lions or hyenas hunting a herd of antelopes. While this is certainly one type of safari, today there are limitless ways to see all the breathtaking wonders Africa has to offer-and a wealth of convenient, comfortable lodges and transportation options to help you enjoy the trip. For instance:

Take a night voyage into the savannahs of eastern Africa to discover an entirely unseen world of wildlife, including aardvarks and owls;
Paddle a canoe through the wetlands of Botswana to get closer to nature than ever before-hippos surfacing with a large exhale, or elephants parading across a channel;
Pull out the binoculars or the DSLR camera to spot birds in the Honde Valley between Zimbabwe and Mozambique;
Pick up a snorkel to explore the stunning reefs of the Seychelles or go diving off KwaZulu-Natal's coast; and
Shut off your phone and listen to the strange outbursts from jungle trees, or the eerie call of predators at night.
Whether you are planning your first trip or just want to enjoy the sights and sounds of this magnificent continent from the comfort of your own home, The Great Tours: African Safari transports you to one of the world's most spectacular environments.

Choose Your Own Adventure

Africa is a whopping 12 million square miles in size, and the vast continent hosts many ecosystems and biomes. Although there are limitless ways to explore Africa's many terrains-the flat deserts, the rugged trails, the lush forests, the fertile wetlands-safaris generally fall into five categories, which Mr. Currie examines in detail:

East African Safaris: Kenya and Tanzania are the birthplace of the safari experience and continue to offer thrills for visitors: lions on the Serengeti, gazelle grazing in grasslands, the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, and the hair-raising sounds of predators at night.
Southern African Safaris: Southern Africa is an awe-inspiring mix of desert and wetland safari activities, from the big-game sightings in Zimbabwe to the wetland adventures of Zambia and the Zambezi River. Ideal for adventure-seekers who are also interested in luxury lodges or unconventional hot-air balloon trips.
Water Safaris: Whether by boat or in a dugout canoe-known locally as a "mokoro"-seeing the spectacular birds and wildlife of Botswana's wetlands is unbeatable. The Okavango Delta is a biodiverse oasis and the crown jewel of the African safari experience.
Desert Safaris: The desert country of Namibia holds some of the continent's greatest surprises. The beautiful red dunes are teeming with life and home to some of the planet's rarest desert-adapted species.
Primate Safaris: The great apes are human's closest relatives, and trekking into the tropical mountains and valleys of Uganda, Rwanda, or the Democratic Republic of the Congo offers up-close encounters with gorillas, chimpanzees, and other primates.
Get to Know the Flora & Fauna

There's nothing like the roar of a lion, or spying hyenas skulking across the plains, or getting eye to eye with gorillas in the jungle. As a wilderness adventure, any of these safaris will give you an up-close view of the animal kingdom! From the megafauna rock stars (elephants, rhinos, giraffes) to the vicious predators (lions, leopards, crocodiles) to beautiful birds (eagles, flamingos, storks), this course brings Africa's stunning biodiversity to life.

Among other creatures, you will learn about:

Big Cats and Wild Dogs: Lions, leopards, cheetahs, and jackals hunt the grassy plains and enjoy life at the top of the food chain;
Grazing Herbivores: Antelopes, zebras, and buffalo are the "hunted" in the law of the jungle, but they certainly hold their own when it comes to survival;
Reptiles and Amphibians: Crocodiles and snakes may send a chill up your spine, but these cold-blooded animals play a lively role in the safari; and
Birds: The astounding avians of Africa can be seen up close through a variety of ways, from viewing parks to special equipment-find out how.
Animals may be the main attraction, but the local plant life is crucial for the local ecosystems. With Mr. Currie's expert guidance, you will also get to know the botanical wonders you may encounter.

Experience the Whole of Africa

The word safari comes from the Swahili word for journey. The classic safari experience involves driving into the wilderness, but as you will learn in this course, today there are boundless ways to journey through Africa. For instance, a walking safari takes us into a world where we are not in charge, and, thus, forces us to pay attention to small details that we may miss from the relative safety of a vehicle.

Or how about a night safari? Not only will you encounter nocturnal animals such as the elusive aardvark, but you will also see how predators, herbivores, rodents, and birds all behave differently under the cover of darkness. A night drive into the wilderness can open up a whole new world of wildlife viewing.

Mr. Currie also takes you on less traditional safari experiences-to the beaches of Madagascar and the surf breakers off the coast of South Africa. You'll encounter the warm hospitality of Senegal, meet the people of Ethiopia, and journey through the cities of Cape Town and Nairobi.

Finally, you will consider the issues of sustainability and ethics of ecotourism. How can you plan a responsible safari? Should you hire a guide or self-drive? How do you engage with Africa's remarkable communities in a respectful way? What can you do to encourage conservation?

From UNESCO World Heritage sites to stunning bird sanctuaries, and from national parks to hidden-gem wilderness areas, The Great Tours: African Safari takes you on a journey-a virtual safari-across Africa. Experienced travelers and armchair enthusiasts alike will enjoy the way Mr. Currie brings his years of professional safari guidance to bear as he invites you on an exhilarating tour of a destination like no other. Do you hear the call of the wild yet? Your safari adventure awaits!

France is the world's most visited destination for travelers. From the beloved city of Paris-a global archetype of beauty, romance, and fine living-to the sunshine and lavender fields of Provence, the medieval splendor of Carcassonne and Avignon, the glittering seaside life of the Côte d'Azur, and more, France ignites the imagination and dazzles the senses like no other country on Earth.

In this thrilling new edition of The Great Tours, you'll delve deeply into what makes France such a magical and irresistible draw, and you'll discover how a visit to France can be an unforgettable adventure, an astonishing journey through history, and a multifaceted immersion in the French "art de vivre"-the art of living.

In the 24 visually lavish segments of The Great Tours: France through the Ages, you'll travel across the diverse regions of France, from Brittany and Normandy in the north to Aquitaine and Provence in the south, enjoying an inside view of France unlike any other you'll find without a plane ticket. What truly sets this tour apart is your consummate guide to France, Professor John Greene of the University of Louisville, a multi-award-winning scholar and professor of French language, culture, and civilization.

Professor Greene's extraordinarily detailed knowledge of France has been honed through a lifetime of travel across all of France's remarkable regions-an intimate, personal familiarity with French life and culture far surpassing guidebooks or conventional itineraries. He was named by the French government as a chevalier in the Ordre des Palmes Académiques for services to education and culture. Professor Greene's expert guidance and richly informative commentary make this tour a thoroughly delightful-and insightful-excursion into the cultural and historical treasures of La Belle France.

Discover the Timeless Appeal of France

The Great Tours: France through the Ages is both an ideal resource for planning your own trip to France and a way to enjoy a deeper grasp of the beauty, history, and culture of France from the comfort of your own home. All segments of the tour are richly illustrated with contemporary and historic photos, maps, and visual aids, bringing the sights and landscapes of France vividly alive.

As one of Europe's premier civilizations, with a tradition reaching back over two millennia, France boasts a spectrum of historical treasures and cultural riches to enchant even the most seasoned traveler. Across the many distinct cultural regions of France, you'll enjoy such diverse sites as:

The Palace and Gardens of Versailles-Among Europe's most spectacular royal residences, and the majestic seat of Louis XIV, the "Sun King";
Bordeaux-Home to both the beautiful city of Bordeaux and the superlative, verdant wine region known for some of the world's finest wines;
The Basque Country-Featuring the proud Basque culture, culinary traditions, and fascinating history, plus the world-renowned religious pilgrimage site of Lourdes;
Corsica-Known to the French as the "Isle of Beauty"; the birthplace of Napoléon Bonaparte, seat of the legendary French Foreign Legion, and a paradise of natural scenery; and
Arles-The sun-drenched, historic town of matchless Provençal charm and the place that inspired numerous masterpieces of Vincent van Gogh.

Enjoy a Phenomenal Tapestry of History

France has often been a major player in some of the most impactful events of European history, making it an infinitely rewarding place to visit for history buffs and for travelers looking for a rich, cultural experience. In the course of this wide-ranging travelogue, you will truly experience France through the ages. As you journey through France's regions and subregions, you'll encounter landmarks of French heritage, such as:

The 35,000-year-old cave paintings of Lascaux and Chauvet, among the world's most stunning prehistoric artworks;
The imposing medieval castles of the Cathars-a storied religious sect-and their dramatic history;
Outsized historical figures such as Eleanor of Aquitaine, Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc), and Charles de Gaulle, and the sites associated with their lives;

And explore the city's multidimensional history, iconic landmarks, romantic neighborhoods, and artistic and literary life, as well as its eminence in the worlds of cinema, photography, and fashion.

Lyon-Explore the self-proclaimed capital of French gastronomy, even above Paris; learn why this remarkable city attracts icons of haute cuisine; sample its culinary scene, from its fine dining restaurants to its more informal "bouchons"; and also note how Lyon gave birth to France's-and the world's-love affair with the cinema.

The Loire Valley-Spend time in one of France's most celebrated regions, most famous for its 300+ châteaux, a Renaissance cluster of architectural masterpieces designed for luxury, comfort, and elegance; trace the historic factors that created this most astounding building boom; and take an in-depth look at the palatial splendor of Azay-le-Rideau and Chenonceau.

Regional French Food and Wine-In the home of the Western world's most celebrated culinary and wine traditions, learn about the history, lore, and methods of preparation of many of France's favorite regional foods, such as bouillabaisse (Marseille), ratatouille (the Rhône valley), and cassoulet (the Camargue). Visit France's world-famous wine regions of Alsace, Champagne, Burgundy, and the Loire, among others, and discover iconic wines, including Château Margaux, Beaujolais, Côtes du Rhône, and Pouilly-Fumé.

Glories of Art and Architecture-Across the span of the tour, pay visits to a multitude of France's greatest cultural treasures, such as the island citadel of Mont Saint-Michel; the 11th-century Bayeux tapestry; Claude Monet's home and gardens at Giverny; the Cathedrals of Rheims, Chartres, and Paris's Notre Dame, as well as Paris's sublime Opéra Garnier; the Gallo Roman architecture of Arles; and Avignon's magnificent Palais des Papes.

Finally, you'll also take in the remarkable natural wonders of France and its idyllic landscapes, from the gorgeous coastal scenery of Normandy and Brittany to the soaring peaks of the French Alps.

In The Great Tours: France through the Ages, you'll mine the essence of a culture that has long stood as a symbol of romance, beauty, and the very best of life and living.

TTC - The Wonders of America's State Parks

Duration: 10h 35m | Video: .MP4 1280x720, 30 fps(r) | Audio: AAC, 44100Hz, 2ch | Size: 8.9 GB
Genre: eLearning | Language: English

Enormous mountain ranges and breathtaking gorges. Wild sea shores and lazy rivers. Ghost towns and battlefields. Pristine lakes and coral reefs. Not to mention nearly 25,000 campsites, 52,000 miles of hiking trails, over 300 marinas, and hundreds of pools and ski slopes and golf courses. Encompassing more than 18 million acres of land, America's state parks feature a variety of adventures that is nothing short of astounding.

There's so much more to America's natural wonders than the Grand Canyon and Old Faithful. In fact, if you're looking for a remarkable treasure trove of wilderness, wildlife, history, and recreation, look no further than your own backyard-within one of the more than 8,000 state parks across the United States.

Whether it's Niagara Falls in New York, Pennekamp Coral Reef in the Florida Keys, or the redwood state parks of northern California, America's state-managed lands offer something for every kind of visitor. Stopping for a day trip? Camping out for an entire week? Traveling from the comfort of your favorite armchair? No matter what your passion, sense of adventure, or budget is, you'll find a state park that suits your needs and represents a powerful lesson in America's natural and human heritage. It's one thing to read about America's story-it's another thing entirely to actually live it.

So, what's the best way to get the most out of your visit to these incredible places? There's no better person to ask than travel journalist Joe Yogerst, a writer for National Geographic Books who has spent his career exploring the amazing natural and historic landmarks on display at state parks. And in The Wonders of America's State Parks, he guides you on a riveting adventure through more than 100 state wilderness areas stretching from New England to the Pacific Northwest to the Hawaiian Islands. You'll learn how these state parks came into existence, what makes them such a special part of America's story, and how to maximize your experience, whether you're looking for historical insights, panoramic views, or a rejuvenating hike. Mr. Yogerst's 24 lectures will infuse you with the same enthusiasm he shares for these awesome natural, historical, and recreational wonders.

State Parks: Earth's "Coolest Destinations"

America's national parks are iconic for a reason, and they often get the lion's share of public attention. But many state parks emerged long before the National Park Service made it a mission to preserve and conserve America's wild spaces.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, while the federal government kept itself busy with transforming America into an industrial powerhouse, state officials took it upon themselves to establish their own parklands. Since their creation, state parks have:

Helped save the bison from complete extinction;
Preserved California's majestic, ancient coastal redwoods;
Enshrined landmarks like Abraham Lincoln's birthplace; and
Given rise to popular sports including mountain biking.
No wonder Mr. Yogerst describes spots that focus on preserving living history-places like New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest, Maryland's Assateague State Park, Colorado's Garden Park Fossil Area, and dozens more-as "among the coolest destinations on planet Earth."

Enjoy Virtual Tours of State Parks

Whether you're planning your next family vacation or simply want to explore America from the comfort of home, The Wonders of America's State Parks offers virtual tours unlike anything you can get from a simple travel guide.

With contagious excitement and enthusiasm, Mr. Yogerst weaves history, geology, and culture to create a comprehensive overview of what you'll find in some of the nation's most incredible state-owned lands-and why they matter. In lectures that touch on everything from environmental science to geology to biology, you'll ford rivers, climb mountains, drive through deserts, and snorkel along coral reefs in different regions of the country.

Niagara Falls: Established in 1885, Niagara Falls attracts an estimated 10 million visitors each year (as much as Yosemite and Yellowstone national parks combined). The oldest state park in the United States, its falls are arrayed across a 3,400-foot stretch of the Niagara Escarpment between upstate New York and Canada's Ontario province.
The Florida Keys: Comprised of around 1,700 sandy islands, the Florida Keys encompass celebrated spots like Key West and Key Largo as well as sandbar islands like Molasses Key. Stretching 190 miles from south of Miami to the Dry Tortugas, the Florida Keys are the world's third-longest barrier reef after the ones in Australia and Belize.
The Great Lakes: Recent restoration efforts have transformed Lakes Ontario, Erie, Huron, Michigan, and Superior into can't-miss state parks that will deepen your appreciation for these geographical marvels. Formed by glaciation during the ice age, the Great Lakes are home to spots including the iconic Mackinac Island State Park.
The Alaskan Frontier: Despite being home to astonishing national parks, America's "last frontier" also contains more than 120 state parks-most of which are unspoiled and uncrowded. Alaska state parks are home to everything from glaciers and tundra to grizzly bears and caribou to relics from the legendary gold rush days.
The Mississippi River: Stretching from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico, the Mississippi River is a 2,320-mile waterway that flows right through the American heartland. Interestingly, very little of the river falls within the boundaries of federal parks. Rather, the majority of its landmarks are found at state parks including Fort Snelling State Park.
For every state park highlighted in this course, you'll get a list of some of the top things to see and do. Among the many fascinating spots Mr. Yogerst explores are:

The Old Man of the Mountain Memorial at Franconia Notch State Park, a roadside stop that helps visitors imagine a much-beloved rock formation that crumbled in 2003;
Beaming Barney at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, a towering red-and-white coastal lighthouse erected in 1859 that offers panoramic views of the Jersey Shore;
The Porcupine Mountains at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, dubbed by the indigenous Ojibwa people for their resemblance to a crouching porcupine; and
Fort Adams in Rhode Island, a massive masonry bastion constructed after the War of 1812 to protect the United States's Eastern Seaboard from future attacks.
Get a Wealth of Helpful Tips and Recommendations

Overwhelmed by the possibilities that await you at America's great state parks? Mr. Yogerst's lectures are the perfect way to organize a future trip. Not only does he provide you with a wealth of historical background, he also includes his own tips and recommendations on what to see-and how to see it.

For example, while Mr. Yogerst doesn't normally recommend a specific route through a state park, he does suggest you start your visit to the Adirondacks with a drive along State Route 28 through the Upper Hudson Valley for a better look at its gorgeous rivers and lakes. And when visiting the five state parks in the Tidewater region, he suggests renting a car and driving in a circle starting from Assateague Island and ending at Yorktown.

Of course, Mr. Yogerst has his own list of personal favorite parks and sites for you to consider. Chief among them: the little-known and least-visited Garden Park Fossil Area in the Colorado Rockies, which is one of the world's great dinosaur graveyards.

Embark on a National Treasure Hunt

An added benefit of The Wonders of America's State Parks: You'll get so much more engagement than you would from a pamphlet or brochure. Every lecture comes complete with detailed maps and guides designed specifically for this course-not to mention captivating photographs that capture the astounding beauty of the American landscape.

Whether you're preparing for your next vacation or just want to explore the world alongside an expert travel writer, these lectures are a window into the astounding variety of natural, historical, and recreational treasures right in our nation's backyard.

Create our first Svelte component,

Link Wordpress with our Svelte app,

Import Bootstrap as a CDN,

Import others scripts that we will need,

Show/hide a cookie banner,

Put/remove cookies from browser

What is Svelte?

Svelte: A new approach to building rich user interfaces

Svelte provides a different approach to building web apps than some of the other frameworks covered in this module. While frameworks like React and Vue do the bulk of their work in the user's browser while the app is running, Svelte shifts that work into a compile step that happens only when you build your app, producing highly-optimized vanilla JavaScript.

The outcome of this approach is not only smaller application bundles and better performance, but also a developer experience that is more approachable for people that have limited experience of the modern tooling ecosystem.

Svelte sticks closely to the classic web development model of HTML, CSS, and JS, just adding a few extensions to HTML and JavaScript. It arguably has fewer concepts and tools to learn than some of the other framework options.

How can gaining an understanding of the subtle body and doing subtle body practices improve our life and enhance our yoga practice? In this program, tantra yoga educator Jeanne Heileman teaches you about the five koshas (the "layers" or "sheaths" that yoga tradition describes as making up the whole of our individual beings), the prana vayus ("pathways for the breath"), and the power of mantra and pranayama (breathwork) in cultivating vitality in daily life.

You'll learn about each kosha-the etymology of their names, some of their origin stories, and how they can affect our everyday actions. Jeanne gives you real-life examples and tips to consider as you reflect on your own connection to the subtle body. To enhance your understanding of these concepts, she offers you mantra, pranayama, and meditation practices that are designed to bring you to a place of greater equanimity and peace.

This program includes eight short lectures, one long lecture, and two practices: Annamaya Kosha (the physical sheath); Pranamaya Kosha (the life force sheath); Manomaya Kosha (the the "lower mind" sheath); Vijnanamaya Kosha (the wisdom sheath); Anandamaya Kosha (the bliss sheath); A Look at the Big Picture: Gross Body, Subtle Body, Causal Body; The Prana Vayus; Let's Explore Mantra; The Practice: Integrated Pranayama; and The Practice: Mantra Meditation.
