Sartre, Existentialism, and the New Age of Nausea (ePUB)

cbd59d6a4fc06af2dbbcf75e72faa331.webp

Sartre, Existentialism, and the New Age of Nausea
by Stuart Sim
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031907736 | 94 Pages | True ePUB | 0.33 MB

This book explores the relevance of Sartrean existentialism to the contemporary socio-political landscape, with particular reference to his early novel Nausea and the concepts of bad faith and authenticity outlined in his major philosophical work Being and Nothingness. In an era where political authoritarianism has asserted itself so powerfully internationally and climate crisis has revealed the shortcomings of the political class so sharply, Stuart Sim argues that existentialism has much to offer as a worldview in addressing such issues. The sense of a world order falling apart connects us strongly to Sartre's situation in the Europe of the 1930s and 40s, when fascism was in the ascendant and human rights under severe threat as a direct consequence. To read Sartre's work through these phenomena is to realise the renewed importance of key existentialist concepts to the current geopolitical situation.

Satirical Tibet The Politics of Humor in Contemporary Amdo

dc991e57a88ea69aba53714ff636ae9f.webp

Satirical Tibet: The Politics of Humor in Contemporary Amdo
by Timothy Thurston
English | 2025 | ISBN: 0295753102 | 238 Pages | True PDF | 31 MB

What does comedy look like when the wrong punchline can land you in jail?
Humor has long been a vital, if underrecognized, component of Tibetan life. In recent years, alongside well-publicized struggles for religious freedom and cultural preservation, comedians, hip-hop artists, and other creatives have used zurza, the Tibetan art of satire, to render meaningful social and political critique under the ever-present eye of the Chinese state. Timothy Thurston's Satirical Tibet offers the first-ever look at this powerful tool of misdirection and inversion. Focusing on the region of Amdo, Thurston introduces the vibrant and technologically innovative comedy scene that took shape following the death of Mao Zedong and the rise of ethnic revival policies. He moves decade by decade to show how artists have folded zurza into stage performances, radio broadcasts, televised sketch comedies, and hip-hop lyrics to criticize injustices, steer popular attitudes, and encourage the survival of Tibetan culture.
Surprising and vivid, Satirical Tibet shows how the ever-changing uses and meanings of a time-honored art form allow Tibetans to shape their society while navigating tightly controlled media channels.

Scorched Earth A Global History of World War II

2583f9a48868217f8349b0aefb1bb041.webp

Scorched Earth: A Global History of World War II by Paul Thomas Chamberlin
English | May 6th, 2025 | ISBN: 1541619269 | 656 pages | True EPUB | 37.14 MB
An unsparing, "sweeping," and "vivid" (Drew Gilpin Faust, author ofThis Republic of Suffering)new history of World War II, recasting the conflict as a brutal struggle for survival among declining and ascendant imperial powers

In popular memory, the Second World War was an unalloyed victory for freedom over totalitarianism, marking the demise of the age of empires and the triumph of an American-led democratic order.
In Scorched Earth, historian Paul Thomas Chamberlin dispatches the myth of World War II as a good war. Instead, he depicts the conflict as it truly was: a massive battle beset by vicious racial atrocities, fought between rival empires across huge stretches of Asia and Europe. The war was sparked by German and Japanese invasions that threatened the old powers' dominance, not by Allied opposition to fascism. The Allies achieved victory not through pluck and democratic idealism but through savage firebombing raids on civilian targets and the slaughter of millions of Soviet soldiers. The Soviet Union and the United States emerged as hyper-militarized new imperial powers, each laying claim to former Axis holdings across the globe before turning on one another and triggering a new forever war.
Dramatically rendered and persuasively argued, Scorched Earth shows that World War II marked the culmination of centuries of colonial violence and ushered in a new era of imperial struggle.

Secrets of the Killing State The Untold Story of Lethal Injection

027ee2dcb1fc2f30b6c38d83416e5884.webp

Secrets of the Killing State: The Untold Story of Lethal Injection
by Corinna Barrett Lain
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1479832960 | 384 Pages | True ePUB | 0.7 MB

Lethal injection is nothing like what people think. This is its untold story.
In the popular imagination, lethal injection is a slight pinch and a swift nodding off to forever-sleep. It is performed by well-qualified medical professionals. It is regulated and carefully conducted. And it usually provides a "humane" death. In reality, however, not one of those things is true.
Secrets of the Killing State pulls back the curtain on this clandestine punishment practice, presenting a view of lethal injection that states have worked hard to hide. Botched executions are a part of this story, but they are just the tip of the iceberg. For all the suffering that we see, there is also suffering that we don't see. Indeed, the story told here is even bigger than the executions themselves, for behind the scenes is where it unfolds. Fake science, torturous drugs, inept executioners, prison problems, and decades of state secrecy have created an execution method hard-wired to go wrong in countless ways.
The story of lethal injection is a story of gross incompetence, law breaking, torturous deaths, and a stunning indifference to the way in which human beings die at the hands of the state. These are the secrets of the killing state―all that we know from litigation files, scientific studies, investigative journalism, autopsy reports, interviews, and scholarship across a number of fields. Death penalty expert Corinna Barrett Lain uses this groundbreaking journey into the dark reality of lethal injection to shine a light on the American death penalty more broadly and show that the state at its most powerful moment is also the state at its worst.
We are now over 45 years into the lethal injection era, and most Americans still have no idea what states are doing in their name. It's time they found out.

Security, Ethnography and Discourse Transdisciplinary Encounters

6ce0f5d8eaa77dd325b7df80ffa4dcf4.webp

Security, Ethnography and Discourse: Transdisciplinary Encounters
by Emma Mc Cluskey, Constadina Charalambous
English | 2022 | ISBN: 0367532018 | 223 Pages | True PDF | 46 MB

This interdisciplinary book analyses different contexts where security concerns have an impact on institutional or everyday practices and routines in the lives of ordinary people.
Creating a dialogue between the fields of International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, Sociolinguistics, Education and Anthropology, this book addresses core themes associated with conflict and security - peacebuilding, refugee settlement, nationalism, surveillance and sousveillance - and examines them as they manifest in everyday spaces and practices. Seven empirical studies are presented that bring ethnographic and/or close-up interactional lenses to practices of security in schools, refugee centres, care homes, city streets and roadsides. Drawing on fieldwork and data from Cyprus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Sweden, Germany and the US, the chapters explore what notions of suspicion, peace, conflict and threat mean and how they are manifested in people's lived experiences.
This book will be of much interest to students of Critical Security Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Sociolinguistics and International Relations in general.

Selbstbewegung und Lebendigkeit Die Seele in Platons Spätwerk

6bcdfc9e4db273ca7b3c5d45646ef69e.webp

Michele Abbate, Julia Pfefferkorn, Antonino Spinelli, "Selbstbewegung und Lebendigkeit: Die Seele in Platons Spätwerk"
Deutsch | 2016 | ISBN: 3110464632 | PDF | pages: 370 | 1.2 mb

Sex Is a Spectrum The Biological Limits of the Binary

Sex Is a Spectrum: The Biological Limits of the Binary
by Agustín Fuentes
English | 2025 | ISBN: 0691249415 | 214 Pages | PDF | 1.1 MB

Why human biology is far more expansive than the simple categories of female and male
Being human entails an astonishingly complex interplay of biology and culture, and while there are important differences between women and men, there is a lot more variation and overlap than we may realize. Sex Is a Spectrum offers a bold new paradigm for understanding the biology of sex, drawing on the latest science to explain why the binary view of the sexes is fundamentally flawed-and why having XX or XY chromosomes isn't as conclusive as some would have us believe.
In this lively and provocative book, leading biological anthropologist Agustín Fuentes begins by tracing the origin and evolution of sex, describing the many ways in the animal kingdom of being female, male, or both. Turning to humans, he presents compelling evidence from the fossil and archaeological record that attests to the diversity of our ancestors' sexual bonds, gender roles, and family and community structures, and shows how the same holds true in the lived experiences of people today. Fuentes tackles hot-button debates around sports and medicine, explaining why we can acknowledge that females and males are not the same while also embracing a biocultural reality where none of us fits neatly into only one of two categories.
Bringing clarity and reason to a contentious issue, Sex Is a Spectrum shares a scientist's perspective on why a binary view of sex and gender is not only misguided but harmful, and why there are multitudes of ways of being human.

Sexual and Gender Minority History A Counter-Narrative

Sexual and Gender Minority History: A Counter-Narrative
by James I. Martin
English | 2025 | ISBN: 0197765475 | 226 Pages | PDF | 7.9 MB

Sexual and Gender Minority History: A Counter-Narrative tells the story of sexual and gender minority people and communities in the 19th and 20th centuries, which is normally erased from the history that Americans learn. This story is presented as a counter-narrative, since it is history from the perspective of marginalized people. As a counter-narrative, the telling of this history serves to resist ongoing efforts to silence and disempower sexual and gender minorities.
This history begins in Germany, where sexual and gender minority identities originated and the first movement for sexual and gender minority rights flourished before it was brutally destroyed. The story then moves to the United States, where conservative European traditions were imposed on a land in which diverse expressions of gender and sexuality had flourished. The book describes how a variety of sexual and gender minority identities appeared among people who gradually formed communities in large cities across the United States, and how these developments occurred differentially across race, ethnicity, social class, and gender. Periods of development and greater freedom of expression were followed repeatedly by periods of political and social repression. The book also describes the increasing separation of sexual minorities from gender minorities, their progress toward equal rights, the limitations of that progress, and the longer road toward freedom travelled by gender minorities.

The book gives a comprehensive view of the development and in service history of this venerable aircraft. Excellent chapters cover service with the RAF, and South African Air force. This is an excellent book about an iconic and much loved successor to the Lancaster and Lincoln.

Shakespeare and Seriality Page, Stage, Screen

739fa5edd8e1e0286a10e671b309ae00.webp

Shakespeare and Seriality: Page, Stage, Screen
by Elisabeth Bronfen and Christina Wald
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1350437263 | 260 Pages | True PDF | 4.1 MB

Encompassing a wide variety of genres, media and art forms across a broad historical scope, this book identifies central strategies of serialization in Shakespeare's plays and their adaptations.
Beginning with an introduction that theorizes the method of reading Shakespeare serially on page, stage and screen, the first section investigates Shakespeare himself as a serial writer and serial rewritings of Shakespeare by Joyce and Beckett. Shakespeare and Seriality then moves to a series of case studies of performative seriality from the early modern stage to theatre, film and ballet in the 20th and 21st centuries. It culminates in the analysis of adaptations of Shakespeare in complex TV series, including Succession, the postapocalyptic series Station Eleven and the cosy crime series Shakespeare and Hathaway.
This book investigates Shakespeare's seriality from various theoretical perspectives and through multiple methods, including gender and queer theory, ecocriticism, memory and heritage studies, psychoanalysis, empathy studies and fandom studies, reception history and theatre history. Examining serial reading as a method of establishing intertextual and intermedial links, this volume contributes to recent developments in adaptation studies including the debate between Shakespeare and 'not-Shakespeare'.
