The Quest for Excellence Liberal Arts, Sciences, and Core Texts. Selected Proceed...

The Quest for Excellence : Liberal Arts, Sciences, and Core Texts. Selected Proceedings from the Seventeenth Annual Conference of the Association for Core Texts and Courses By Dustin Gish; Chris Constas; J. Scott Lee
2016 | 220 Pages | ISBN: 0761868127 | EPUB | 1 MB
Liberal education aspires to excellence through the cultivation of free human beings who excel in thought, word, and deed. But what exactly is excellence, and why do we admire it? How do we conceive of what is excellent? What constitutes excellence--either for human beings, or in the realms of philosophy, literature, science, and politics? Why is excellence an aim of liberal education? What kinds of texts, courses, and inquiries contribute to achieving this end? Such questions animate the studies herein. The essays in this volume reflect on the idea of excellence embedded within core texts, as well as how such texts influence and ennoble higher education. In its chapters, we consider rival forms of excellence from ancient Greece and Rome, through modern Europe and America, and beyond. The world of antiquity and its accounts of excellence, as represented in the works of Euripides, Aristotle, Plato, Archimedes, and Cicero, are here brought into dialogue with diverse modern perspectives on excellence, as articulated by Shakespeare, Descartes, Newton, Locke, Rousseau, Kant, Austen, Darwin, Lincoln, Tennyson, and Nietzsche, as well as (more recently) by John Dewey, Martin Luther King Jr., Cardinal Newman, and Eboo Patel. Our desire to seek and understand excellence transcends borders, and the purpose of this volume is to help perpetuate in contemporary higher education the study of core texts essential to the cultivation of excellence in the liberal arts and sciences.

The Quest for Meaningful Special Education

The Quest for Meaningful Special Education By Amy Ballin
2016 | 205 Pages | ISBN: 1475827598 | EPUB | 1 MB
Every child should have access to an education that works. The Quest for a Meaningful Special Education follows the educational journeys of nine students with a language-based learning disability (LBLD) who, through a combination of parental advocacy and luck, were removed from a debilitating learning situation and enrolled in a school designed to address their particular learning needs. In the process of following their journeys, the book explores the role of cultures within and outside the school and examines some of the ways that the construction of special education has affected student learning. In the context of the ongoing national conversation about student academic success, high school dropout rates, the disproportionate number of prison inmates with learning disabilities, the costs of educating students, and the controversy over the placement of minorities in special education, The Quest For a Meaningful Special Education is a timely book that will add a new perspective to current debates

The Radical Disciple Three Pamphlets Inspired by Koinonia Partners

The Radical Disciple : Three Pamphlets Inspired by Koinonia Partners By Bill Lane Doulos; Ched Myers
2015 | 90 Pages | ISBN: 1625648685 | EPUB | 1 MB
The Radical Disciple invites the followers of Christ to take seriously the scriptural mandate to love God and neighbor. The cost of contemporary discipleship is just as high now as it was in the early days of the Christian church. But the sharp edge of the gospel mandate has been watered down. The hard passages of the Bible have been ignored by a church that has become too comfortable with the economic and political status quo. But when a disciple sidesteps the call of God to radically embrace the poor of the world, then that disciple also sidesteps the comfort and the inheritance that God holds for God's faithful people. We Christians represent a radical alternative to the greed, complacency, and violence of our age. The promise for us is the promise of community and celebration, joy and peace. But we must follow the way of the cross, which is just as relevant and compelling for us as it was for Jesus two thousand years ago. So we have set before us in these pages a prescription for the servanthood that is required of us. By assuming the yoke of a servant, we claim joy and purpose for our lives. Read this book and gain insight into the meaning of these words for Christians and the church today.

The Radical Pursuit of Rest Escaping the Productivity Trap

The Radical Pursuit of Rest : Escaping the Productivity Trap By John Koessler; Mark Galli
2016 | 180 Pages | ISBN: 0830844449 | EPUB | 1 MB
We live in a culture that values activity, achievement and accomplishment. Whether in our careers, churches, schools or families, busyness is the norm in our lives, and anything less makes us feel unproductive and anxious. We have to work all the harder, then, to pursue true rest in a 24-7 world that is constantly in motion. John Koessler understands that rest is not automatic or easy to attain. He names the modern-day barriers to becoming people of rest and presents a unique perspective on how pursuing rest leads us to the heart of God. With honest, biblical reflections on trends in our culture and churches, he exposes our misconceptions regarding the concept of rest, as well as offering correction and practices to align our ideas with God's ideal. The book includes reflection and discussion questions designed for both individual and group use. You will discover the true meaning behind Jesus' idea of the yoke of rest and restoration for your mind, body and soul.

The Real Deal

The Real Deal By Rod Williams
2014 | 97 Pages | ISBN: 1780781210 | EPUB | 1 MB
Rod's drug addiction began at college and quickly moved from cannabis to Ecstasy and eventually heroin and crack cocaine. He soon became heavily involved in dealing drugs and gambling in order to finance his drugs habit. Following an attempt to import class A drugs onto the island of Guernsey, Rod ended up in prison. At rock bottom and in desperation, he turned to God and began his journey to freedom from his addictions. "This book is a compelling read...It details the ever greater power of Jesus, who saves lives and brings about a complete transformation to those lives which are on the path to utter destruction, in a way that nothing and no one else can. The book reveals how God's love, grace and true forgiveness turn not only Rod's life around, but also the lives of his long-time accomplices and shows how that has impacted hundreds of others' lives for the better. His accomplices also give us an insight into their own journey with Rod. Altogether, a mighty powerful read." John Kirby, International Director, Christians Against Poverty

The Record Men The Chess Brothers and the Birth of Rock Roll

The Record Men: The Chess Brothers and the Birth of Rock Roll By Rich Cohen
2005 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 039305280X | EPUB | 1 MB
On the south side of Chicago in the late 1940s, two immigrants; one a Jew born in Russia, the other a black blues singer from Mississippi; met and changed the course of musical history. Muddy Waters electrified the blues, and Leonard Chess recorded it. Soon Bo Diddly and Chuck Berry added a dose of pulsating rhythm, and Chess Records captured that, too. Rock roll had arrived, and an industry was born. In a book as vibrantly and exuberantly written as the music and people it portrays, Rich Cohen tells the engrossing story of how Leonard Chess, with the other record men, made this new sound into a multi-billion-dollar business; aggressively acquiring artists, hard-selling distributors, riding the crest of a wave that would crash over a whole generation. Originally published in hardcover as Machers and Rockers. About the series: Enterprise pairs distinguished writers with stories of the economic forces that have shaped the modern worlds; the institutions, the entrepreneurs, the ideas. Enterprise introduces a new genre; the business book as literature.

The Red Scare, Politics, and the Federal Communications Commission, 1941-1960

The Red Scare, Politics, and the Federal Communications Commission, 1941-1960 By Susan L. Brinson
2004 | 255 Pages | ISBN: 0275978591 | PDF | 1 MB
The Red Scare at the FCC started when James Lawrence Fly led the agency in many important decisions that were inspired by the New Deal. These decisions outraged both the broadcasting industry and politically conservative legislators, causing them to accuse the FCC of Communist sympathies. This book analyzes the political transition taken by the FCC that turned it into an agency that fully participated in the Red Scare of the 1950s. This book analyzes many significant FCC cases and policies that have never been considered within the context of New Deal policymaking or its impact. This work is the first to look into the impact of the Red Scare on an executive agency. Its combination of new archival and behind-the- scenes information makes this book a great addition to the growing body of research on media history and regulation.

The Reimagining of Place in English Modernism

The Reimagining of Place in English Modernism By Sam Wiseman
2015 | 176 Pages | ISBN: 0990895882 | PDF | 1 MB
The work of English modernists in the 1920s and 1930s - particularly D.H. Lawrence, John Cowper Powys, Mary Butts and Virginia Woolf - often expresses a fundamental ambivalence towards the social, cultural and technological developments of the period. These writers collectively embody the tensions and contradictions which infiltrate English modernism as the interwar period progresses, combining a profound sense of attachment to rural place and traditions with a similarly strong attraction to metropolitan modernity - the latter being associated with transience, possibility, literary innovation, cosmopolitanism, and new developments in technology and transportation. In this book, Sam Wiseman analyses key texts by these four authors, charting their respective attempts to forge new identities, perspectives and literary approaches that reconcile tradition and modernity, belonging and exploration, the rural and the metropolitan. This analysis is located within the context of ongoing critical debates regarding the relationship of English modernism with place, cosmopolitanism, and rural tradition; Wiseman augments this discourse by highlighting stylistic and thematic connections between the authors in question, and argues that these links collectively illustrate a distinctive, place-oriented strand of interwar modernism. Ecocritical and phenomenological perspectives are deployed to reveal similarities in their sense of human interrelationship with place, and a shared interest in particular themes and imagery; these include archaeological excavation, aerial perspectives upon place, and animism. Such concerns stem from specific technological and socio-cultural developments of the era. The differing engagements of these four authors with such changes collectively indicate a distinctive set of literary strategies, which aim to reconcile the tensions and contradictions inherent in their relationships with place.

Featuring insightful testimonies from key leaders-including CEO of TriStar Trust Bank Gene Pickelman and former Michigan State Senator Ken Horn.
This book investigates not only what it means to be a leader, but what it means to be a resilient leader.
This comes from understanding 2 important things:
Developing skills to bounce back from adversityLearning from other successful leaders and what they have done to achieve their successFrom Fortune 500 corporations to the small coffee shop on the corner, to hospitals and religious organizations, leaders of all kinds will benefit from the lessons presented in this book.
Author Brian Molitor, CEO of Molitor International, has distilled decades of his work into actionable guidance that is accessible and impactful. It also includes insightful testimonials from other leaders sharing their own experiences.
It is common for "leadership" books to focus on techniques to inform, inspire, teach, train, and develop the talents of team members.
This approach ignores the fact that leaders are only human, subject to the same stresses, problems, and storms as any other. Which is why the focus on self-care, personal wellness, and developing resilience is an important aspect of this book.
Being a resilient leader can be learned and this book provides everything you will need to get started.

The Rest of Life Rest, Play, Eating, Studying, Sex from a Kingdom Perspective

The Rest of Life : Rest, Play, Eating, Studying, Sex from a Kingdom Perspective By Ben Witherington
2012 | 100 Pages | ISBN: 1467436690 | EPUB | 1 MB
When was the last time you heard a sermon on the theological importance of play? What do rest, eating, studying -- and sex -- have to do with the Kingdom of God? Strangely, although these activities together take up much of our time, they seldom receive much discussion from a biblical point of view. In The Rest of Life Ben Witherington explores these subjects in the light of biblical teaching about the Kingdom of God and the Christian hope for the future. He shows why and how all the normal activities of life should be done to the glory of God and for the edification of others. Focusing as it does on practical, everyday matters in an accessible style, this topical study is ideal for both individual reading and small-group discussion.

The Retreat of the Social The Rise and Rise of Reductionism

The Retreat of the Social : The Rise and Rise of Reductionism By Bruce Kapferer
2005 | 131 Pages | ISBN: 1845451759 | PDF | 1 MB
The powerful individualist and subjectivist turn in anthropology - a turn that cannot be easily separated from larger political processes of neo-liberalism and neo-conservatism - is one factor resulting in notions of the social and of society as becoming little else than empty shells of small or no analytical value. The essays presented here, all by leading anthropologists, take a variety of positions on the matter of the retreat of the social. All demonstrate that if anthropology and other social sciences are to fulfill the task of a critical understanding of the diverse realities in which we all must live, these disciplines will find it impossible to so do without a strong concept of the social.

The Rhetoric of the Pulpit A Preacher's Guide to Effective Sermons

The Rhetoric of the Pulpit : A Preacher's Guide to Effective Sermons By Jon Meyer Ericson
2016 | 138 Pages | ISBN: 1498235204 | EPUB | 1 MB
The Rhetoric of the Pulpit treats the sermon as the single most important factor in evangelism for a parish, and also the most important factor in the spiritual growth of both the congregation and the pastor. With emphasis on the Word as the foundation, the author adds music and liturgy to the sermon's structure to build a unified worship experience. Recognizing that the Word is truth, but that the truth needs to be made to seem true, the book offers sound, practical advice on sermon preparation based on both classical and contemporary communication theory. Sermon preparation is viewed as a process that begins with downloading the Word, followed by productive meditation. The process then moves through the rhetorical steps, from a search for content to the sermon's delivery. Throughout the book, the rhetorical principles are treated as a subordinate element to the Word, a means of giving effectiveness to the truth. The Rhetoric of the Pulpit aims to reflect the spirit of Aristotle, St. Augustine, St. Paul, and Kenneth Burke.

The Rhetorical Power of Children's Literature

The Rhetorical Power of Children's Literature By John H. Saunders; Michael Warren Tumolo; Jennifer Beidendorf; Mary Elizabeth Bezanson; Lauren Rose Camacci; Joshua D. Hill; Lauren Lemley; Brett Lunceford; Deborah Lee Norland; Christopher J. Oldenburg
2016 | 192 Pages | ISBN: 1498543294 | EPUB | 1 MB
The Rhetorical Power of Children's Literature is an edited volume with contributions from established and new scholars of rhetoric offering case studies that analyze a full array of genres in children's literature from picture books to young adult novels. Collectively, this volume's contributions interrogate how children's literature is a powerful yet under examined space of rhetorical discourse that influences one of the most vulnerable segments of our population. This book is singularly unique given that it will be the first collection of essays on children's literature from the distinct perspective of the field of Communication. Beyond topical novelty, the contributors utilize a range of scholarly methods to analyze instances of the rhetoric of children's literature. Consequently, essays in this volume may be read for both their specific topical content and as exemplars for multiple methodological approaches to the study of the rhetoric of children's literature. Collectively, the contributors set out to contribute to our knowledge of how instances of children's literature operate as rhetorical discourses. The volume is organized by case studies approached through critical, rhetorical lenses that analyze specific instances of children's literature from two distinct stages of children's developmental reading experiences including pre/early literacy and fluent reading. Structurally, the book includes eight content chapters divided evenly with four chapters analyzing books for young children and four chapters analyzing books targeting audiences from late-childhood to adolescence. An overview of each content chapter accompanies this proposal. is an edited volume with contributions from established and new scholars of rhetoric offering case studies that analyze a full array of genres in children's literature from picture books to young adult novels. The Right Not to Use the Internet (Current Debates in European Integration)

The Right Not to Use the Internet (Current Debates in European Integration) by Dariusz Kloza, Elżbieta Kużelewska, Eva Lievens
English | April 24, 2025 | ISBN: 1032866314 | 276 pages | PDF | 18 Mb
This pioneering collection addresses the prospective fundamental/human right not to use the Internet and the challenges that the non- use of the Internet poses for democracy.

As the Internet has increasingly ceased to be a mere option and rather turned into a de facto obligation for anyone who exercises their rights or fulfils duties, these developments bring about profound ramifications for the very existence and the functioning of democracy, and therefore merit a critical reflection. With contributors from academia and legal practice from all over Europe, this edited volume offers timely critical analysis of the right not to use of the Internet, at times supplemented with policy advice and postulates for law reform.
This book is of key interest to scholars and students of - predominantly - law, political science and philosophy as well as to policymakers, judges and nongovernmental organisations at national, supranational and international levels.

The Rise and Fall of the UK Film Council

The Rise and Fall of the UK Film Council By Gillian Doyle; Philip Schlesinger; Raymond Boyle; Lisa Kelly
2015 | 225 Pages | ISBN: 074869823X | EPUB | 1 MB
Drawing on interviews with leading film executives, politicians and industry stakeholders, including Alan Parker, Stewart Till and Tim Bevan, this book provides an empirically grounded analysis of the rise and unexpected fall of the UK Film Council, the key strategic body responsible for supporting film in the UK for over a decade. As well as offering a critical overview of the political, policy and technological contexts which framed the organisation's creation, existence and eventual demise, the book provides a probing analysis of the tensions between national and global interests in an increasingly transnational film industry, not least underlining how both US and EU interests and pressures have played themselves out. It therefore provides a timely and significant investigation into the contemporary policy environment for film in the 21stcentury.

The Risk of Freedom Ethics, Phenomenology and Politics in Jan Patocka

The Risk of Freedom : Ethics, Phenomenology and Politics in Jan Patocka By Francesco Tava; Jane Ledlie
2015 | 197 Pages | ISBN: 1783483776 | EPUB | 1 MB
The Risk of Freedom presents an in-depth analysis of the philosophy of Jan Patočka, one of the most influential Central European thinkers of the twentieth century, examining both the phenomenological and ethical-political aspects of his work. In particular, Francesco Tava takes an original approach to the problem of freedom, which represents a recurring theme in Patočka's work, both in his early and later writings. Freedom is conceived of as a difficult and dangerous experience. In his deep analysis of this particular problem, Tava identifies the authentic ethical content of Patočka's work and clarifies its connections with phenomenology, history of philosophy, politics and dissidence. The Risk of Freedom retraces Patočka's philosophical journey and elucidates its more problematic and less evident traits, such as his original ethical conception, his political ideals and his direct commitment as a dissident.
