A History of Korea (Third Edition)

702ef957397598e19eecc59bb1db9cb6.webp

A History of Korea (Third Edition) by Kyung Moon Hwang, Eric Jason Martin, Tantor Audio
English | March 08, 2022 | ISBN: B09TCKKTJG | 12 hours and 15 minutes | M4B 64 Kbps | 336 Mb
This accessible and engaging new edition continues to be one of the leading introductory textbooks on Korean history. Fully revised throughout, the author takes a thematic and chronological approach to guide listeners from early state formation and the dynastic eras to the modern experience. Episodic accounts in each chapter are discussed in context with extensive examination of how the events and themes under consideration have been viewed up to the present day. By discussing recurring themes such as collective identity, external influence, social hierarchy, and family and gender, the author introduces the major historical events, patterns, and debates that have shaped both North and South Korea over the past 1,500 years.

This textbook is essential for undergraduate and postgraduate students of history and those studying Korean or Asian history in particular. The first half of the book covers the pre-20th-century era, and the second half covers the modern era, reflecting the structure of most Korean history courses.

A History of Prostitution From Antiquity to the Present Day

976ec8c01e05c7d67881c4f3087765c8.webp

George Ryley Scott, "A History of Prostitution: From Antiquity to the Present Day"
English | 2006 | ISBN: 071031177X | EPUB | pages: 354 | 4.4 mb
This scientific survey of history of prostitution from antiquity to the twentieth century is one of the first comprehensive studies of this sociological phenomenon of our time. George Ryley Scott writes this treatise in reaction to the lack of literature on the subject at this time, dismissing the only volumes available as outdated, fragmentary or prejudiced- as they were often sponsored by reformist groups. Thus, Scott presents us with a refreshingly honest and nonbiased view of prostitution as it was throughout history up until its first publishing in 1936.

A History of the British Army - Vol. II (1714-1763)

09d7c1bfd10631fc4e7c0f2d9bcd20d2.webp

Sir John William Fortescue, "A History of the British Army - Vol. II (1714-1763)"
English | 2013 | ASIN: B00BWZYYN6 | EPUB | pages: 545 | 0.7 mb
Sir John Fortescue holds a pre-eminent place amongst British military historians, his enduring fame and legacy resting mainly on his life's work "The History of the British Army", issued in 20 volumes, which took him some 30 years to complete. In scope and breadth it is such that no modern scholar has attempted to cover such a large and diverse subject in its entirety; but Sir John did so and with aplomb, leading to a readable and comprehensive study.

According to Professor Emeritus of Military History at King's College, Brian Bond, the work was "the product of indefatigable research in original documents, a determination to present a clear, accurate, and readable narrative of military operations, and a close personal knowledge of the battlefields, which enabled him to elucidate his account with excellent maps. Most important, however, was his motivation: namely, a lifelong affection for the old, long-service, pre-Cardwell army, the spirit of the regiments of which it largely consisted, and the value of its traditions to the nation. An important part of his task was to distil and inculcate these soldierly virtues which, in his conservative view, contrasted sharply with the unedifying character of politicians who habitually meddled in military matters." ODNB.
This second volume covers the period from 1713 to 1763, including the Jacobite rebellion of 1715, the wars of Austrian Succession, and British expansion into America and India and the enduring struggle with France for Imperial power.
A MUST READ for any military enthusiast.
Author - Fortescue, J. W. Sir, 1859-1933.
Text taken, whole and complete, from the second edition published in1910, London, by Macmillan and Co.
Original Page Count - xxii and 606 pages.
Illustrations - Numerous maps and plans

A History of the Medicines We Take From Ancient Times to Present Day

5f15191a6b76dd7995ce32d33c383a49.webp

A History of the Medicines We Take: From Ancient Times to Present Day by Anthony C Cartwright, N Anthony Armstrong
English | August 3, 2020 | ISBN: 1526724030 | 272 pages | PDF | 17 Mb
Remedies the gap in the market for a guide to the history of the medicines we take not just the drugs they contain.

A History of the Medicines We Take gives a lively account of the development of medicines from traces of herbs found with the remains of Neanderthal man, to prescriptions written on clay tablets from Mesopotamia in the third millennium BC, to pure drugs extracted from plants in the nineteenth century to the latest biotechnology antibody products.
The first ten chapters of the book in PART ONE give an account of the development of the active drugs from herbs used in early medicine, many of which are still in use, to the synthetic chemical drugs and modern biotechnology products. The remaining eight chapters in PART TWO tell the story of the developments in the preparations that patients take and their inventors, such as Christopher Wren, who gave the first intravenous injection in 1656, and William Brockedon who invented the tablet in 1843. The book traces the changes in patterns of prescribing from simple dosage forms, such as liquid mixtures, pills, ointments, lotions, poultices, powders for treating wounds, inhalations, eye drops, enemas, pessaries and suppositories mentioned in the Egyptian Ebers papyrus of 1550 BCE to the complex tablets, injections and inhalers in current use. Today nearly three-quarters of medicines dispensed to patients are tablets and capsules. A typical pharmacy now dispenses about as many prescriptions in a working day as a mid-nineteenth- century chemist did in a whole year.

A Jew in the Roman Bathhouse Cultural Interaction in the Ancient Mediterranean

df02ee9df85bc6c7607d0e154c8107b2.webp

A Jew in the Roman Bathhouse: Cultural Interaction in the Ancient Mediterranean by Yaron Eliav
English | May 16, 2023 | ISBN: 0691243433 | 392 pages | MOBI | 23 Mb
A provocative account of Jewish encounters with the public baths of ancient Rome

Public bathhouses embodied the Roman way of life, from food and fashion to sculpture and sports. The most popular institution of the ancient Mediterranean world, the baths drew people of all backgrounds. They were places suffused with nudity, sex, and magic. A Jew in the Roman Bathhouse reveals how Jews navigated this space with ease and confidence, engaging with Roman bath culture rather than avoiding it.
In this landmark interdisciplinary work of cultural history, Yaron Eliav uses the Roman bathhouse as a social laboratory to reexamine how Jews interacted with Graeco-Roman culture. He reconstructs their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about the baths and the activities that took place there, documenting their pleasures as well as their anxieties and concerns. Archaeologists have excavated hundreds of bathhouse facilities across the Mediterranean. Graeco-Roman writers mention the bathhouse frequently, and rabbinic literature contains hundreds of references to the baths. Eliav draws on the archaeological and literary record to offer fresh perspectives on the Jews of antiquity, developing a new model for the ways smaller and often weaker groups interact with large, dominant cultures.
A compelling and richly evocative work of scholarship, A Jew in the Roman Bathhouse challenges us to rethink the relationship between Judaism and Graeco-Roman society, shedding new light on how cross-cultural engagement shaped Western civilization.

A Journey Through Economics

A Journey Through Economics: On Prosperity, Digitalization, and Justice
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3658470925 | 441 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 2 MB
Anyone who does not know the history of economics cannot think competently about the future of economics. This book offers an introduction to economic history for those looking for more than just dry theory. The author takes you on a journey through the economy, from its beginnings in the Stone Age to the digitalization of modern times. In addition to the nature and fundamental principles of economics, the book also introduces great thinkers such as Aquinas, Keynes, and Erhard. While ancient philosophers like Plato and Aristotle focused mainly on the ethical dimension of economics, the first modern economist and moral philosopher, Adam Smith, for example, pondered how nations could achieve prosperity. Today, however―in an era where capitalism is increasingly under scrutiny―the question is how prosperity can reach everyone, especially in times of digitalization. Therefore, the book not only addresses economic concepts of the past and present but also offers an intriguing look into the future. Issues of social justice are discussed alongside topics such as digitalization, globalization, and ecology.

A Journey Through The Wonders Of Plane Geometry
English | 2025 | ISBN: 9811292841 | 456 Pages | PDF (True) | 65 MB
Geometry is one of the most beautiful aspects of mathematics. This beauty is because you can "see" geometry at work. Most people are exposed to the very basic elements of geometry throughout their schooling with the most concentrated study in the secondary school curriculum. High schools in the United States offer one year of concentrated study of geometry that shows students how a mathematician functions, since everything that is accepted beyond the basic axioms must be proved. Unfortunately, as the course is only one year long, there is still very much in geometry left unexplored for the general audience. That is the challenge of this book, in which we will present a plethora of amazing geometric relationships.

A Madman's Will John Randolph, Four Hundred Slaves, and the Mirage of Freedom

A Madman's Will: John Randolph, Four Hundred Slaves, and the Mirage of Freedom by Gregory May
English | April 11, 2023 | ISBN: 1324092211 | 416 pages | PDF | 24 Mb
The untold saga of John Randolph's 383 slaves, freed in his much-contested will of 1821, finally comes to light.

Few legal cases in American history are as riveting as the controversy surrounding the will of Virginia Senator John Randolph (1773-1833), which―almost inexplicably―freed all 383 of his slaves in one of the largest and most publicized manumissions in American history. So famous is the case that Ta-Nehisi Coates has used it to condemn Randolph's cousin, Thomas Jefferson, for failing to free his own slaves. With this groundbreaking investigation, historian Gregory May now reveals a more surprising story, showing how madness and scandal shaped John Randolph's wildly shifting attitudes toward his slaves―and how endemic prejudice in the North ultimately deprived the freedmen of the land Randolph had promised them. Sweeping from the legal spectacle of the contested will through the freedmen's dramatic flight and horrific reception in Ohio, A Madman's Will is an extraordinary saga about the alluring promise of freedom and its tragic limitations. 20 black-and-white illustrations throughout

A Mathematical Introduction to General Relativity (2nd Edition)

10c8a5cc4f3f99590c90b4ee86990569.webp

A Mathematical Introduction to General Relativity
English | 2025 | ISBN: 9819802199 | 544 Pages | PDF (True) | 6.3 MB
The book aims to give a mathematical presentation of the theory of general relativity (that is, spacetime-geometry-based gravitation theory) to advanced undergraduate mathematics students. Mathematicians will find spacetime physics presented in the definition-theorem-proof format familiar to them. The given precise mathematical definitions of physical notions help avoiding pitfalls, especially in the context of spacetime physics describing phenomena that are counter-intuitive to everyday experiences. In the first part, the differential geometry of smooth manifolds, which is needed to present the spacetime-based gravitation theory, is developed from scratch. Here, many of the illustrating examples are the Lorentzian manifolds which later serve as spacetime models. This has the twofold purpose of making the physics forthcoming in the second part relatable, and the mathematics learnt in the first part less dry. The book uses the modern coordinate-free language of semi-Riemannian geometry. Nevertheless, to familiarise the reader with the useful tool of coordinates for computations, and to bridge the gap with the physics literature, the link to coordinates is made through exercises, and via frequent remarks on how the two languages are related. In the second part, the focus is on physics, covering essential material of the 20th century spacetime-based view of gravity: energy-momentum tensor field of matter, field equation, spacetime examples, Newtonian approximation, geodesics, tests of the theory, black holes, and cosmological models of the universe. Prior knowledge of differential geometry or physics is not assumed. The book is intended for self-study, and the solutions to all the 283 exercises are included. The second edition corrects errors from the first edition, and includes 60 new exercises, 10 new remarks, 29 new figures, some of which cover auxiliary topics that were omitted in the first edition.

A Matter of Complexity Subordination in Sign Languages

Roland Pfau, "A Matter of Complexity: Subordination in Sign Languages "
English | ISBN: 1501511335 | 2016 | 270 pages | EPUB, PDF | 10 MB + 3 MB
Since natural languages exist in two different modalities - the visual-gestural modality of sign languages and the auditory-oral modality of spoken languages - it is obvious that all fields of research in modern linguistics will benefit from research on sign languages. Although previous studies have provided important insights into a wide range of phenomena of sign languages, there are still many aspects of sign languages that have not yet been investigated thoroughly. The structure of subordinated clauses is a case in point. The study of these complex syntactic structures in the visual-gestural modality adds to our understanding of linguistic variation in the domain of subordination. Moreover, it offers new empirical and theoretical evidence concerning possible structures and functions of subordination in natural languages. And last but not least, it answers the question to what extent the corresponding morphosyntactic and prosodic strategies depend on the modality of articulation and perception. This volume represents the first collection of papers by leading experts in the field investigating topics that go beyond the analysis of simple clauses. It thus contributes in innovative ways to recent debates about syntax, prosody, semantics, discourse structure, and information structure and their complex interrelation.

A Measure Short of War A Brief History of Great Power Subversion

e6fb761da93e3e0398d2313911a5206e.webp

A Measure Short of War: A Brief History of Great Power Subversion by Jill Kastner, William C. Wohlforth
English | January 7th, 2025 | ISBN: 0197683169 | 304 pages | True EPUB (Retail Copy) | 9.12 MB
A fast-paced, gripping history of meddling, manipulation, and skulduggery among great power rivals

In 2016, the United States was stunned by evidence of Russian meddling in the US presidential elections. But it shouldn't have been. Subversion-domestic interference to undermine or manipulate a rival-is as old as statecraft itself. The basic idea would have been familiar to Sun Tzu, Thucydides, Elizabeth I, or Bismarck. Russia's operation was just the latest episode, and there will be more to come.
It came as a surprise in 2016 because the sole superpower had fallen asleep at the wheel. But what's really new? Have we entered a new age of vulnerability? To answer these questions, and to protect ourselves against future subversion, we need a clear-eyed understanding of what it is and how it works.
In A Measure Short of War, Jill Kastner and William C. Wohlforth provide just that, taking the reader on a compelling ride through the history of subversion, exploring two thousand years of mischief and manipulation to illustrate subversion's allure, its operational possibilities, and the means for fighting back against it. With vivid examples from the ancient world, the great-power rivalries of the 19th century, epic Cold War struggles, and more, A Measure Short of War shows how prior technological revolutions opened up new avenues for subversion, and how some democracies have been fatally weakened by foreign subverters while others have artfully defended themselves-and their democratic principles.
A primer on the history of subversive statecraft in great power rivalry, A Measure Short of War will leave readers smarter about foreign meddling, more prepared to debate national responses, and better able to navigate between the twin temptations of insouciance and overreaction.

A Monument to Dynasty and Death The Story of Rome's Colosseum and the Emperors Who...

A Monument to Dynasty and Death: The Story of Rome's Colosseum and the Emperors Who Built It (Witness to Ancient History) by Nathan T. Elkins
English | September 3, 2019 | ISBN: 1421432544 | 184 pages | MOBI | 36 Mb
Go behind the scenes to discover why the Colosseum was the king of amphitheaters in the Roman world―a paragon of Roman engineering prowess.

Early one morning in 80 CE, the Colosseum roared to life with the deafening cheers of tens of thousands of spectators as the emperor, Titus, inaugurated the new amphitheater with one hundred days of bloody spectacles. These games were much anticipated, for the new amphitheater had been under construction for a decade. Home to spectacles involving exotic beasts, elaborate executions of criminals, gladiatorial combats, and even―when flooded―small-scale naval battles, the building itself was also a marvel. Rising to a height of approximately 15 stories and occupying an area of 6 acres―more than four times the size of a modern football field―the Colosseum was the largest of all amphitheaters in the Roman Empire.
In A Monument to Dynasty and Death, Nathan T. Elkins tells the story of the Colosseum's construction under Vespasian, its dedication under Titus, and further enhancements added under Domitian. The Colosseum, Elkins argues, was far more than a lavish entertainment venue: it was an ideologically charged monument to the new dynasty, its aspirations, and its achievements.
A Monument to Dynasty and Death takes readers on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Colosseum from the subterranean tunnels, where elevators and cages transported gladiators and animals to the blood-soaked arena floor, to the imperial viewing box, to the amphitheater's decoration and amenities, such as fountains and an awning to shade spectators. Trained as an archaeologist, an art historian, and a historian of ancient Rome, Elkins deploys an interdisciplinary approach that draws on contemporary historical texts, inscriptions, archaeology, and visual evidence to convey the layered ideological messages communicated by the Colosseum. This engaging book is an excellent resource for classes on Roman art, architecture, history, civilization, and sport and spectacle.

A Mother's Promise: My true story of surviving Auschwitz and the horrors of the Holocaust
by Renee Salt

English | January 23, 2025 | ISBN: 1399625438 | 257 Pages | True epub | 19,7 MB

'Mama, it's me.' I held her hand in mine, hoping it would give her the strength to hold on. Finally, she spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. 'Do not cry when I die.'
From invasion to liberation, September 1939 to April 1945, as Renee was marched from ghetto to camp, there was one constant. One hand that clutched hers - her mother's. Every day for nearly six years, mother and daughter were bound together in hell. From Auschwitz-Birkenau to Bergen-Belsen, they were a powerful source of solace and hope for one another.
The strength of Sala's love gave them both something fragile yet beautiful to cling to in an ugly, depraved world. It was her mother who hid Renee, lied to the SS, went right when she was directed left - whose small actions had life-saving consequences. Now, for Renee, the need to share has finally overcome the desire to forget.
A Mother's Promise is a love letter to a mother eighty years in the making.

A New Approach to Dogs and Dog Training Human-Canine Synergy in Theory and Practice

A New Approach to Dogs and Dog Training: Human-Canine Synergy in Theory and Practice by Theovoulos Koutsopoulos
English | May 18, 2024 | ISBN: 303154000X | 344 pages | MOBI | 14 Mb
This book presents a new and innovative concept in dealing with dogs: the human-canine synergy (HCS), characterized by a holistic nature and its differentiation from unidimensional terms expressing the affiliation of humans and dogs (Relationship, Interaction, Bonding). Related to the use and training by humans, it applies three main categories of dogs: a) the empathy/therapeutic individuals, which are dogs helping persons with empathy- or therapeutic needs; b) assisting/working dogs carrying out specific actions to aid or assist humans perform specific tasks; and c) the facilitating/inspiring dogs, which enable or improve various human activities, including classroom dogs for teaching and learning purposes in almost all educational subjects.

Organized in three parts, chapters address the following needs:
* The first section illuminates the concept of HCS as well as basic principles determining this synergy and consequently the process of training dogs (owners and professional trainers). Readers will understand the role of a dog's personality, behavior and especially temperament in its successful training.
* In a scientifically documented way, the second part guides those who wish to engage in dog training (amateur or professional). It describes basic training forms within the HCS framework (obedience, protection, detection and classroom dog) and necessary steps for proper completion.
* The third book part describes the business of dog training with multi-dimensional approach by emphasizing a good understanding and knowledge of interactions and the environment in which trainer, owner and dog typically operate.
Overall, this work is a valuable read for anyone who deals with our four-legged companions for business or pleasure.
