Taj Mahal ist arabisch für "Krone der Paläste", und der Name könnte nicht passender sein für eines der am besten erkennbaren Gebäude der Welt. Das Taj Mahal wurde Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts innerhalb von 20 Jahren als Mausoleum für die Frau des Kaisers Shah Jahan erbautth und wird von der UNESCO, die es zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt hat, treffend als "das Juwel der muslimischen Kunst in Indien und eines der weltweit bewunderten Meisterwerke des Weltkulturerbes" beschrieben. Das Taj Mahal ist in der Tat eine globale Ikone, weil es die künstlerischen und architektonischen Elemente verschiedener Kulturen, darunter der indischen, osmanischen, persischen und islamischen Kulturen der Region, meisterhaft miteinander verbindet.
Die Marmorkuppel ist zwar das erste Merkmal, das am Taj Mahal auffällt, doch auch die sorgfältige Gestaltung des gesamten Bauwerks ist unglaublich beeindruckend, und Tausende von Arbeitern waren mehrere Jahre mit der Arbeit an den anderen Elementen beschäftigt, von den Gärten bis zu den Kalligraphien an der Außenseite. Zum Taj Mahal gehören auch andere Gebäude, darunter eine Moschee und weitere Gräber und Mausoleen für Personen, die dem Kaiser nahe standen.
Angesichts des Umfangs und der Qualität des Bauwerks ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass das Taj Mahal die Menschen auf der ganzen Welt seit Jahrhunderten fasziniert, und natürlich sind alle möglichen Mythen über das Bauwerk entstanden. Die Frage nach dem Platz des Menschen im erweiterten Universum hat jede bekannte Kultur seit dem Beginn der aufgezeichneten Geschichte beschäftigt. In Ermangelung der Mittel, das Gegenteil zu beweisen, sind die Diskussionen über eine Alternative zur einsamen Existenz der Erde konzeptionell geblieben. Die anhaltende Debatte wird durch das Auftreten unerklärlicher Phänomene in der Atmosphäre und im Weltraum über die Jahrhunderte hinweg beflügelt, so dass der Kontakt mit außerirdischen Zivilisationen in einigen der ältesten Beispiele gegenständlicher Kunst dargestellt wurde.

In den Felszeichnungen von Valcamonica in der italienischen Lombardei-Ebene lassen verlockende Radierungen vermuten, dass die Menschen der Antike dieselbe Art von Erscheinungen erlebten, wie sie sich dem modernen Menschen offenbaren. Diese Zeichnungen aus dem Jahr 10000 v. Chr. sind das Gegenstück zu den heutigen angeblichen Beweisen für einen solchen Kontakt. Neben Luftfahrzeugen sind auch behelmte menschliche Gestalten zu sehen, die Licht ausstrahlen und nicht identifizierbare Artefakte tragen. Solche Beispiele finden sich nicht nur auf der Landmasse der Erde, sondern auch auf antiken Tafeln, Tempeln und großen westlichen Kathedralen.
Sowohl im Alten als auch im Neuen Testament der Bibel wird das Erscheinen von scheinbar übernatürlichen Wesen gemeinhin durch Hesekiels Visionen des "Rades" verkörpert, das von vielen als "himmlisches" Handwerk oder Wesen aus dem Reich der Seraphien interpretiert wird. Ähnliche Erscheinungen reichen von Engelsbesuchen bei der Geburt Christi bis hin zum Buch der Offenbarung am Ende des Neuen Testaments. In Ermangelung einer wissenschaftlichen Sprache zur Analyse dieser Erscheinungen wurde die Engelsmetapher im Rahmen des Modells der "himmlischen Hierarchie" zur gewählten Bezeichnung einer wissenschaftlich ungebildeten Bevölkerung. Die Darstellungen werden von Millionen Menschen auf der ganzen Welt als die wahre Realität jener Zeit geschätzt und verehrt. Wenn sie tatsächliche Ereignisse und Wesen darstellen, können der Engel mit dem flammenden Schwert im Garten Eden, die Verkündigung an Maria und das Erscheinen der Herolde bei den Hirten aus wissenschaftlicher Sicht in alle möglichen Phänomene umgedeutet werden.
Als der technische Fortschritt und die Entwicklung fliegender Flugzeuge zur Realität wurden, stieg natürlich auch die Zahl der UFO-Sichtungen und das Interesse an möglichen Kontakten mit Außerirdischen. Während Vorfälle wie der in Roswell zu Verschwörungen und einer Begeisterung unter denjenigen führten, die darauf bestanden, dass die Regierung Beweise für die Existenz von Außerirdischen verheimlichte, untersuchten Regierungen auf der ganzen Welt Mitte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts tatsächlich heimlich UFO-Sichtungen.
In Anbetracht all dessen wäre es für Wissenschaftler im 20.Jahrhundert wohl kaum bahnbrechend, eine Diskussion beim Mittagessen zu führen, in der die Suche nach außerirdischem Leben zur Sprache kommt, und die Frage, wo es sich befinden könnte, ist harmlos genug. Allerdings sorgte der Physiker Enrico Fermi 1950 mit seiner "beiläufigen Mittagsbemerkung"[1] im Beisein von Kollegen für Furore, die eigentlich ganz harmlos waren. Zu der illustren Gesellschaft gehörten Edward Teller, ein ungarischer Physiker, Herbert York, ein amerikanischer Atomphysiker mit mohawkischer Abstammung, und Emil Konopinski, ein Atomphysiker polnischer Herkunft. Fermi selbst, ein in Rom geborener Italo-Amerikaner, war bekannt für die Entwicklung einer statistischen Grundlage für subatomare Phänomene, für Arbeiten über durch Neutronen verursachte nukleare Veränderungen und für die erste kontrollierte Kettenreaktion bei der Kernspaltung. In seinem Bestreben, das Atom zu beherrschen, entwickelte er den ersten Kernreaktor. Als begnadeter Theoretiker trieb er die statistische Mechanik voran und erhielt den Nobelpreis über ein Jahrzehnt, bevor er seine wichtige Frage stellte.
